Location
Chipping Campden is a lovely market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire. It is known for its unusual and attractive High Street and is said to be ‘the most beautiful village street now left on the island’ by G.M Trevelyan (English Historian). The high street is long and broad and is flanked on either side by an almost unbroken single terrace, made up of many different architectural styles.
There are various attractions in the village, including St James Church (one of England’s finest Wool Churches) featuring a magnificent 120ft tower and a very spacious interior.
Chipping Campden is conveniently located in the north Cotswolds, meaning you can enjoy the delights of this charming old wool merchant’s town, but also the nearby surrounding shire counties of Oxfordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire. From Blenheim palace and the Cotswolds to the south, to Worcester and the Malvern’s to the west plus Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick.
Food & Drink
Chipping Campden has numerous places to eat and drink, with a range of cuisines and prices to suit most tastes and budgets. The list below is a small sample of the range of options available. Pre-booking is advised.:
Noel Arms (https://bespokehotels.com/noelarmshotel) is conveniently located across the road from Honey Pot cottage. This pub has lots of history, including being the place that Charles II rested after his defeat by Cromwell at the battle of Worcester. The food here is traditional with a hint of international influences, all prepared from local produce. Their coffee shop is open throughout the day serving hot drinks and homemade cakes. It also opens at 7.30am for breakfast (most local tea rooms offering breakfast don’t open until 9am). Booking advised for breakfast and dinner. Lunch 12-3pm, dinner 6-8.30pm, breakfast 7.30-9.30am weekdays and from 8am until 10am at weekends. Dog friendly.
Cotswold House Hotel (www.cotswoldhouse.com) is located in the heart of Chipping Campden. The kitchen team take their inspiration from the finest offerings of dedicated producers - whether it be wholesome crusty breads, locally churned cheeses, home-reared meats, best Cornish fish, vegetables from the lush Vale of Evesham, or jams and preserves from small-scale artisan producers. There are two dining spaces at Cotswold House - the relaxed bistro area and sophisticated Fig restaurant - as well as an option to have lunch or dinner at our sister property The Noel Arms directly opposite. On warm days, enjoy a drink, coffee, or lunch on the Pavilion Terrace tucked away in the hotel garden. Sit under a shady umbrella and enjoy the peace and quiet from morning coffee to your early evening sun-downer. Lunch is served 12-3pm 7 days a week, dinner 6-9pm 7 days a week, Sunday brunch 11-2pm and their traditional 'Chipping Campden' afternoon tea is served daily from 1-5 pm. Well behaved dogs are welcome.
Michael’s Mediterranean Restaurant (www.michaelsmediterranean.co.uk) specialises in Greek and modern Mediterranean cuisine, served in a relaxed, intimate setting. Wine and dine in relaxed surroundings, with the warm ambience of open fires and a friendly service. From a delightful array of Mezze dishes, fresh fish and seafood with seasonal daily specials to the renowned “Marathona” Fillet Steaks. This restaurant is easy to find on the main high street of Chipping Campden. Brunch served 10-11:45am, lunch 12-2.30pm and dinner from 5pm. Dog friendly.
The Ebrington Arms (www.theebringtonarms.co.uk/) is a favourite of ours, located in the nearby village of Ebrington. The food here is delicious, inventive and classic British cooking. Wines are from independent growers including the Cotswolds’ own Little Oak Vineyard. The Ebrington Arms is off the beaten track and perfect for exploring the Cotswold hills before refuelling at the Arms. Sunday lunch 12-4pm, Sunday dinner 4-6.30pm, and serving food on weekdays from 12pm. Dogs on leads are welcome in the pub and the garden but not the restaurant.
